Windrush Awareness by Rising Stars NW

We’re so excited to share more about our most recent project which is all about raising awareness about Windrush compensation schemes that are avaliable.

Right now in the UK, the Windrush Generation of people who came to Britain from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and other Caribbean islands between 1948 and 1971 are being denied basic rights. Many have been threatened with deportation or have lost their jobs and housing. This is completely unacceptable! We want to be part of the community that is working to change this.

Our project aims to create awareness of the Windrush compensation and schemes available to residents living in Stockport and Greater Manchester. We’re organizing a series of workshops between April and June, feeding into the narrative around these schemes for justice for the Windrush Generation. These workshops will be community-led providing spaces for people to come together, share their concerns and experiences, answer questions, and most of all connect people with key community organizations who can further support them.

Do you know about the Windrush schemes that are available?

The Windrush Scheme can help you get the documents you need to prove your right to be in the UK. The Windrush Compensation Scheme could compensate you if you suffered losses because you weren’t able to prove your right to live in the UK.

The schemes are available to the people who arrived in the UK many years ago and have suffered from the following;

  • do not have documentation confirming their immigration status
  • have faced difficulties in proving their right to work,
  • to rent a property,
  • gain access benefits and services to which they are entitled.

The Government has apologized to people in this position and has made a commitment to help them get the documents they need.

The Windrush Help Team is here to help you apply to the Windrush Scheme and claim compensation. You can find out more information here https://windrush.campaign.gov.uk/

Who can apply

You may be able to apply for compensation if you;

  • You settled lawfully in the UK before the end of 1988.
  • You or your parents are from a Commonwealth country and settled lawfully in the UK before 1973.
  • Some children, grandchildren, close family members and relatives of people who have died may also be able to claim.

How much you may get

Compensation starts at a minimum of £2,500 (in exceptional circumstances awards will increase) There is no limit on the total amount, and no end date for the scheme.

All Windrush cases are dealt with sensitively by the Windrush Team. If you apply, it will not affect the immigration status of you or your family.

We want to interview you!

Rising Stars NW is looking for 3 people from the older generation to talk about their experiences of living in the Windrush era and share information. The interview will be very informal and relaxed. If you or someone you know would like to take part, please contact jade@risingstarsnw.com to arrange a suitable date and time.
