Here at Rising Stars, we think it’s very important to highlight our volunteers and the work they have done. This week’s Spotlight feature is Sophia Michael.
We asked Sophia a few questions about her time at Pie Radio and here’s what she had to say
“I started at Pie in August 2020! After spending so much time at home after the first lockdown it made me realize that radio is something that I love, and I wanted to get way more involved with a community station. At the time I was still a student at The University of Manchester”.
What did you learn in your time at Pie Radio?
“Pie has taught me to be more confident in my presenting skills. At the start of my time with the station, I went on a presenting course run by Chris Buckley. This was very helpful in teaching me how to understand radio and presenting in terms of the listener and what they want”.
What did you enjoy the most in your time at Pie Radio?
“I enjoy the sense of community at Pie Radio. There’s a lot of support and you are always meeting creative like-minded people. Some highlights of mine have been covering live news stories with a camera team or going to festivals and speaking to the crowds. I would love to do more of that“.

What are your career aspirations?
“I would love to become a full-time presenter/DJ. I also love running events, producing radio, and being involved with theatre, I hope to have a career that enables me to flit between all these passions of mine”.
What are you doing now?
“I’m currently a Broadcast Assistant for BBC Radio 6 working on the Craig Charles, Chris Hawkins and Amy Lamé shows. As well as this, I’m still presenting, I have started DJing at multiple events and I run a charity arts night with Jasmine called Artdress-it”.
