Here at Rising Stars, we think it’s very important to highlight our volunteers and the work they have done. This week’s Spotlight feature is Carlos Gurnani.
Carlos started volunteering at Pie Radio in October 2020 writing content for the website and progressed into a paid role in April 2021 where he was planning, producing, and editing visual content. Carlos was also involved in heading various funded projects. Carlos has his own radio show called Mango Masala. He really can do it all!
We asked Carlos a few questions about his time at Pie Radio and here’s what he had to say.
What did you learn in your time at Pie Radio?
“When I started working at Pie Radio, I already had a basic understanding of the way radio works, but my time there significantly increased my knowledge. I learnt the do’s and don’ts of DAB radio, especially in regards to radio etiquette. I also increased my abilities in regards to using various software and websites such as Adobe Premiere Pro and WordPress”.
What did you enjoy the most in your time at Pie Radio?
“What I enjoyed the most at Pie Radio was the freedom of creative expression. I’ve always been a very creative person but haven’t necessarily had the opportunity to pursue my ideas or passions in the past. At Pie, I was able to put my plans into action and produce a multitude of different creative projects. Though my role primarily in content creation for the website, I was able to develop ideas in multiple other fields”.

What are your career aspirations?
“My current career aspiration are to secure a permanent position working in radio, ideally relating to British South Asian culture and music. I’m most passionate about network/admin roles, but I also really enjoy production and presenting”.
What are you doing now?
“I’m currently working on a five month scheme at BBC Asian Network. This ‘Where It Begins’ scheme is designed to expose young creatives to the multiple different areas behind the scenes at the station and allow them to develop their own skills in areas of their choosing. So far I’ve had the chance to work on a number of shows with multiple different teams. The multiple projects I worked on as part of Pie Radio were definitely a key addition to my CV during the application process”.
Make sure you tune into his radio show, Mango Masala Saturdays 4-6 pm on Pie Radio. You can follow him on Instagram @gvrnztagram.
